It doesn’t matter where you are, either in the city or in the province, if there are sudden deaths or unexplained disappearances, the aswangs are to blame. Every culture has their own folklore, each of them unique, and in the Philippines it involves the “ lamang lupa.” No amount of colonization can remove our beliefs, that there are entities, seen and unseen, lurking everywhere. The Halloween season is upon us again, monsters, ghosts, and aswangs are lurking around the corner and on rooftops looking for prey. It’s unfortunately the case that there is no good alternative for a corny title – not to mention the fact that the book does explain exactly what it promises to. They are far more valuable than their cheap titles suggest. Before I summarize my notes, a quick aside: do not let yourself be fooled by the titles of personal finance books. I love Scott Trench because of his work on The Bigger Pockets Money Podcast, so it was a no-brainer that I would eventually read his book, Set For Life: Dominate Life, Money and the American Dream. Tessa is sarcastic, rude and bitter-all that we expect a teenager to be-yet as the novel progresses, her anger at her failing health evolves into an appreciation of the smaller joys life presents. There is no surprise happy ending here, but the journey of the novel itself is emotionally surprising. Tessa, a 16-year-old battling cancer, makes a list of the things she wants to experience before her life ends: Sex, drugs and love are all on the agenda. Downham has constructed a teen novel that is neither overly sweet nor patronizing-instead, Before I Die offers a candid and piercing view of the way a teenager's mind works. Ruth Chou Simons has written this book from her own battles with striving- rooted partly in the achievement and honor based Asian culture she grew up with and shares with readers- and encourages us to reject the striving and to rest in the grace of God. What is the goal anyway? Do we even know anymore? It’s the voice of the world, the message of our society: ‘You have what it takes if you dig deep enough, try hard enough, you are your own hero, you can achieve anything you set your mind on, go get it girl, it’s yours for the taking.’Īnd since we like control, standards that are measurable, and lists that are checkable, we run that little hamster wheel of striving to be the ever elusive perfect version of ourselves and it is truly never-ending. I don’t know about you, but I definitely feel the exhaustion of striving. Just that phrase- ‘when strivings cease’- doesn’t that sound nice? “Cease striving and know that I am God I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalm 46:10) “Could it be that we are so worn and desperate for ways to better ourselves because we’ve missed the power, inherent in the grace of God, that eradicates self-improvement altogether?” When Strivings Cease: Replacing the Gospel of Self-Improvement with the Gospel of Life-Transforming Grace Tag me while you’re listening & as always love to hear your thoughts :) Rate, Subscribe & Review the Podcast on Apple Join the Naked Beauty Community on IG: out for all previous episodes & search episodes by topic Links to Products/Resources Mentioned: My Today Show feature with Ami Colé, Ep.36: Nichelle Gainer, Vintage Black Glamour, The Josephine Baker Story (1991), Ada “Bricktop” Smith, Jazz Age Cleopatra As we kick off the first week of Black History Month, tune in to celebrate an icon who reminds us all that Black history is truly American history.
